Project “Fix My Wheels”
Let’s bust the myth…
SASSA provides all people with disabilities in South Africa with a disability grant. This grant enables the person to address all the special needs their disability causes them. Right?
Unfortunately, things aren’t this simple. In many struggling households, the disability grant of one person may even be the only form of income the entire family has. As a result, the disability grant is used to buy food or to pay school fees for the children. The person with the disability has nothing left to pay for the special challenges they are facing due to their disability.
Additionally, if a person with a disability ever attempts to work in a regular job, they lose their right to the disability grant for the rest of their lives, even if it turns out the person is (or later becomes) unable to work this regular job. This leaves many people with disabilities without the support they need.
How can we help?
People with mobility impairments often approach Leli khono because they need a wheelchair or walking aids. With “Fix My Wheels” we are able to assist in these needs.
We collect (or sometimes buy) second-hand wheelchairs and walking aids. If these are not in good condition, we fix them up. This gives us a supply of useable wheelchairs and walking aids to assist those in need.
