Project “Train a Counsellor”

Let’s bust the myth…

A person with a disability is unable to go to school or to learn things. They are completely dependent on the help and support of others. Right?

Every person, regardless of their disability status, is a human being who strives to a form of independence and fulfilment in life. Most disabilities do not affect a person’s ability to learn new knowledge or skills. Very few people with disabilities are completely dependent on someone else’s help for every aspect of life.

Unfortunately, due to this myth, many children with disabilities in South Africa have been denied the right to go to school. As a result, learning new skills and knowledge at a later age, can be quite challenging. But at Leli khono, we don’t believe this is impossible until we have tried first.

How can we help?

People with disabilities know better than anyone else what it is like to live with a disability, and how to learn to live life to the fullest after disability hit. They are therefore best placed to counsel and mentor newly disabled people, to help them understand that life is far from over.

In partnership with TrainYouCan, Leli khono offers accredited counsellor training. When participants take the training through us, we give special attention to counselling in a disability context. We primarily train people with disabilities, and in some cases their primary caregivers. These counsellors become Leli khono partners in their community to mentor and support others.

Because this training is accredited, there is a cost involved in training each participant. Consider supporting one participant.
